Using fNIRS in Hyperscanning

An fNIRS study to assess brain activity during a competitive checker game

In hyperscanning, brain activity of two or more subjects is measured simultaneously during social interaction. Hyperscanning finds application in different research areas, for instance in developmental or psychological studies. Using fNIRS for hyperscanning entails multiple advantages: due to its portability and relative resistance to movement artifacts, it can be used in every-day scenarios to ensure more realistic research settings. We performed a small and competitive in-house study to test the usage of fNIRS during hyperscanning, where participants had to play checker in pairs of two, while prefrontal brain activity was measured using the Brite Frontal. Application –

Using fNIRS to estimate Respiratory Rate

A new perspective on respiratory interference

Respiration is generally considered as a physiological interference, i.e., artifact, in fNIRS signals. However, it has remained unanswered whether it is possible to estimate respiratory rate (RR) from such interference. Estimation of RR may provide a complementary information that can be used alongside the cerebral fNIRS data analysis in several applications such as sports sciences. In our latest research at Artinis, we therefore proposed a method for RR estimation from fNIRS based on the hypothesis that the changes in the spectrum of baseline wander of O2HB signal is related to alternations in RR. To assess the performance of this method, two different datasets acquired with the Brite and the PortaLite MKII: the first one was used to adjust parameters of the proposed method and the second one was solely used for testing.

Data analysis –

Shared NIRS format (SNIRF)

In recent years, the use of fNIRS devices in different configurations and techniques has been increased and multiple NIRS data analysis toolboxes, such as Homer (FieldTrip, MNE Phyton e.g.), were implemented. However, both lack of explicitly defined data storage standards and standardized export formats of different fNIRS device provider were leading to restrictions in sharing data amongst researchers, transparency and development of software analysis toolboxes.

To prevent this, a shared NIRS format was introduced in 2022 (SNIRF), implemented in many hardware and software platforms and is already finding widespread use in the fNIRS community. To learn more about the SNIRF format, read this article.
 

Devices –

Measuring with two sensors in one device

The PortaLite MKII recently fully replaced the old PortaLite MKI. Everyone can now measure with two sensors in one control unit, for instance on both brain hemispheres, or brain and muscle simultaneously. Furthermore, it offers incorporated short separation channels that enable measuring from superficial tissue.

Concussion has become one of the most frequent medical events in athletes. Recent research demonstrated changes of cognitive and neurophysiological conditions after concussion. In a study by Sirant et al., NIRS was used to assess long-term effects of multiple concussions on prefrontal cortex hemodynamics during a neurovascular coupling activating task.

In recent years, music interventions are more frequently used as treatment of chronic pain. In a study by Du et al., the effects of music on subjective pain ratings and physiological indications, such as heart rate variability and functional connectivity of the prefrontal cortex were assessed.

Our NIRS device cannot only be used in humans, but also find application in different animal species. Debracque et al. performed a study in female baboons while using fNIRS to assess brain activity during perception of conspecific and heterospecific agonistic vocalizations.
