NIRS made easy

NIRS device

The OctaMon Muscle is a wearable eight channel NIRS device optimized for muscle oxygenation measurements. Changes in oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, and total hemoglobin can be regionally monitored with the two times four channel configuration. Each channel width is customizable, providing you with a variety of possible settings as often required in sports science research.

With the OctaMon Muscle, we focused on the usability and portability of NIRS while still providing the same quality of data as measured by large NIRS systems. The OctaMon is a very lightweight and plug and play device with close to no set-up time. It works with multichannel LED's, giving you continuous and real-time feedback in our data analysis software that is delivered with the system.

OctaMon applications

The OctaMon Muscle research package makes monitoring muscle oxygenation easy and accessible. Hyperscanning (monitoring multiple subjects at the same time) is possible since our custom software provides you with the possibility to combine different NIRS devices within one data stream. Tests can be performed in a classic laboratory setting or in the field, while the device is connected to Bluetooth (up to 100 meters range) to the laptop.

Regional differences in oxygenation or agonist-antagonist functioning can be non-invasively analyzed. With the optodes lying flat on the skin, the device is comfortable to wear and therefore suitable for athletes performing at the top of their game but also by patients in rehabilitation studies. With customizable channel length and configuration possibilities, research projects can go from grip strength measurements on the lower arm in elite climbers, to lower limb measurements in patient groups with Peripheral Artery Disease.

The near infrared spectroscopy technique

How it works

Optical oximetry and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in particular is a tool for assessing the oxygenation status and hemodynamics of various organs, e.g. muscle and brain non-invasively. It relies mainly on two characteristics of human tissue. Firstly, the relative transparency of tissue for light in the NIR range, and secondly on the oxygenation dependent light absorbance of hemoglobin. Read more >
