Our Headcap MKII – Improved design for easy and accurate full-head fNIRS measurements
Headcaps are one of the most important accessories for fNIRS experiments, as their fit, design and material can influence data quality and measurement results. At Artinis, we design and develop our own headcaps with ergonomic fit and enhanced comfort in mind, covering the complete cortex. To perform easy and reliable full-head fNIRS measurements, we are happy to announce the release of our new Headcap MKII. Read this blogpost to learn more about the headcap MKII and its (new) features.
1. Made out of neoprene for safe and comfortable use
To ensure high-quality fNIRS measurements even during studies that include movement, we design our own headcaps, which provide an ergonomic fit and clean design. All Artinis headcaps, including the headcap MKII, are made out of neoprene. In comparison to other cap materials, neoprene is relatively sturdy but stretchy and can prevent movement of the headcap and optodes, while still ensuring comfort. Further, due to its blackness and thickness, neoprene provides additional ambient light protection.
2. Designed for optimal use of our MultiBrite devices
The headcap MKII is especially developed for compatibility with our MultiBrite configurations to ensure fast setup even when using a higher number of channels.
A midline is added to the caps, and the headcaps are divided into left hemisphere (L), right hemisphere (R) and middle (M).
The holes include numbers for specific templates that can be used with MultiBrite devices. Short separation channel locations are also indicated on the headcaps (see picture below), showing the direction the SSC holders should be placed in the cap.
The headcaps can, of course, also be used with other devices/device configurations and application of other optode templates, for instance with Brite in single or dual mode, or with a Brite Lite.
3. Scaling of headcaps to ensure comparability amongst different headcap sizes
To make measurements more consistent amongst participants, the inter-optode distances in the headcap MKII are scaled among sizes. This ensures that the premade holes are placed in the exact same location for all headcap sizes, leading to enhanced comparability between subjects with different headcap sizes.
4. Clear indications of 10-20 locations for further orientation
Similar to its predecessor model, 10-20 EEG system locations are indicated on the headcap MKII. These locations are marked as dots, with dotted lines in between each point. The 10-20 system can be used to see which brain region can be measured at which location on the headcap.
